COMMUNICATION BETWEEN PEDESTRIANS AND AUTOMATED VEHICLES

In this project, Interactive Institute Swedish ICT and Viktoria Swedish ICT have worked on early ideas and concepts for enhanced communication between pedestrians and highly automated vehicles.

How do people in the immediate vicinity of an automated vehicle know how it will behave? How do you know the intentions of the vehicle; will it slow down or accelerate? The focus lies on multimodal concepts, where visual and auditory signals are being used to let the vehicle communicate as intuitively as possible with its surroundings.

The example below shows an early idea on how a vehicle could communicate coming to a stop, standing still and finally accelerating. A scenario could, for instance, be that the vehicle stops to let a pedestrian cross the road and then continuing.
