Between challenge and solution: Design space for communicating status of highly automated vehicles

Up to date research in the area of interaction design for automated vehicles has focused on either highly theoretical issues or specific designs limited to certain technology or user scenario. The main purpose of this work is to contribute to filling the gap that exist between these high level models and low level solutions.

This can be achived by providing design aids that specify dimensions to consider for a designer, such as interaction properties (e.g. input and output modalities, directness, temporal aspect) and range of their possible states. The hypothesis is that this approach would allow to map a design spacefor this new task. For the scope of this work, the aim is to focus on communicating with the driver on status of automated vehicle. This problem is both crucial and well-studied feature required for autonomous driving systems. The goal is to define a design space for communicating status of automated vehicle that can be used as a decision support in development of such systems.
