Drive Sweden ABC - Autonomous Base Camp

There is a great interest in the technology and the possibilities associated with autonomous vehicles. In order to better help with requests for last and first mile solutions in future transport systems, Autonomous Base Camp - ABC - has been launched. ABC is a part of the Drive Sweden program office, and RISE Viktoria is lead on this part.

The ABC function has been established within the framework of the Drive Sweden program office to pave the way for the market breakthrough of self-driving vehicles for shorter transportation needs. We are keen to engage in dialogue with organizations – both public and private – that are curious about the technology and interested in integrating it in, for example, urban development, commercial fields or university campuses. We would also naturally like to hold talks with tech suppliers or manufacturers that can satisfy the needs created by tomorrow’s transportation systems.

One example is the development of self-driving shuttle buses for passenger transport used in the initial or final few kilometres to or from work, the shopping centre, campus, hospital or home. Two trials are now being initiated in Sweden: one in Stockholm/Kista and one in Gothenburg at Chalmers and Lindholmen Science Park, where the buses will be operated in mixed traffic.

Public and commercial players in Sweden have also shown substantial interest. Dialogues are currently under way with several players in Sweden with differing perspectives and needs. We believe that by actually testing this new technology in different locations in Sweden we will learn how to reap the full benefits of it – as users, clients, technology developers and operators. ABC at Drive Sweden will now continue its dialogue with established and new players that are interested in investing in and learning more about self-driving shuttle buses. The aim is to be able to provide a handful of initiatives with more specific support in the project stage during the spring.
