DRIWS - Digital Runway Incursion Warning System - is a project aiming at increasing the safety at airports by connecting ground vehicles to the Air Traffic Control - ATC. The technology builds on geo fencing and connected vehicles – opening the door to further airport auomation.

With the DRIWS concept, ground vehicles send their position to ATC and receive a red or green light from ATC to access the runway area, whilst retaining the current proven procedures.

See the demo video below.

The demonstrator was demonstrated to, and well received by, the airports of Sweden and the regulating authorities, the Swedish Transport Agency (TS).

The project had a very short cycle time of 18 months from idea to complete product and is the system is currently marketed by Combitech AB and the Swedish Civil Aviation Administration (LFV).
