Functional Safety in Systems of Road Vehicles

The objective of this exploratory project is to evaluate to what extent existing frameworks and approaches to functional safety are able to support the upcoming cooperative systems of road vehicles. While the idea of cooperative systems is far from new, technological progression now opens up for radically new applications, such as coordinated platoons of vehicles travelling along highways. Such applications are enabled by novel architectural solutions, drawing on high speed inter-vehicle communication supported by different forms of “intelligent infrastructures”.  In contrast to traditional systems under the control of a single actor, the emerging systems involve several stakeholders, different technology bases, and various business models. Consequently, a revised approach to functional safety has to take development, diffusion, maintenance, and other process related issues into account. A key challenge in this project is to outline such a processes perspective on cooperative systems of road vehicles.

The project Functional Safety in Systems of Road Vehicles is a joint project between Viktoria Institute and SP Technical Research Institute of Sweden. It is funded by the partners and RISE Holding AB.
