ProjectInnovation for Sustainable Everyday Travel

Application Areas
Innovation for Sustainable Everyday Travel

With the pace in which information technology in society is changing, will not the demands for support and information from everyday traveler also change? Should the public transport authorities still deliver information services all the way to the passenger, thereby forced to cope with the rapid development technology or should they instead deliver a solid information infrastructure, where open innovation and commercial actors are generating the final product? Can digital services increase environmental awareness among travelers, and actually change behavior towards a more sustainable way of travel?

These questions are the starting point of a four-year research program in the Västra Götaland Region ( "Innovation for sustainable everyday travel”). The project will develop understanding of how digital information infrastructure and related services can contribute to the expansion sustainable travel in the transport system. The program includes and coordinates several projects within the personal transportation area with different focus, financiers and operators to enrich a large-scale initiative.

This will be realized through design-oriented action research where researchers, traffic-information producers, providers of transport and IT-suppliers in interaction with everyday travelers co-create an open and user-driven development of the travel-information of the future. The project has a unique set-up of public authorities, relevant private actors and well-reputed researchers.

Partaking public and private actors represents different parts of the service chain of everyday travel, both as competing and cooperating parties. The project will result in methods and practical examples that will illustrate a innovative way in how the different actors of the development chain can identify, design and develop new services for the everyday traveler. The ambition of the project is to contribute to a long-term development of an intelligent and sustainable public transport system in Västra Götaland, not only as a role model for Sweden, but also for the rest of the world.
