ProjectTRACE EMS: TRAnsitioning to a Circular Economy via Environmental Management Systems

Application Areas
TRACE EMS: TRAnsitioning to a Circular Economy via Environmental Management Systems

The project investigates the extent to which ISO 14001-certified manufacturing companies

considering a transition towards a Circular Economy (CE) may benefit or be hindered from

their Environmental Management System (EMS).

The fundamentals of a system lens, the concept of feedback loops and goals

(such as sustainable resource management, focus on life-cycle thinking and

stakeholder engagement) suggest a plausible similarity between ISO 14001:2015

EMSs and commonly espoused circular economy principles.

ISO 14001 EMSs are widespread in industry and therefore they could

have a very large impact on the speed of a transition towards a circular economy.

We work closely with two companies (Volvo Cars and 3 STEP IT)

to analyse and systematically assess their business practice regulated by

ISO 14001:2015. The resulting benefits and limitations will be evaluated

in relation to BS 8001 (the world’s first standard for the CE) with the advice of standards specialists.
